Popular backyard birds include Rhode Island Red, Ameraucana and Orpington. Remember that chickens take 5 to 6 months to start laying eggs. To get started remember when we you are constructing the coop that if your birds are too tightly packed they will become ill or bad tempered. Give them space. They need a coop to lay eggs and keep them protected from predators.

Feeding chickens, they eat grain, bugs, fruit, kitchen scrapes. Their diet needs to consist of protein, vitamins and minerals. Also adding sand or ground oyster shells will make the shells stronger. Their water source needs to be kept clean to avoid illness.

Backyard chickens are a healthy and fun addition to your family. Please make sure that when you handle the chickens it is important to wash your hands because they have different germs than humans and with proper hygiene they will not be a danger to you or your family.
